Step inside one of Tombstone’s most infamous landmarks and explore the Bird Cage Theatre’s Wild West history at your own pace. Opened on December 24, 1881, the Bird Cage quickly earned a reputation as “the wildest, wickedest night spot between New Orleans and San Francisco,” as reported by the New York Times.
During your self‑guided tour, you’ll wander through the original theater, saloon, gambling rooms, and bordello spaces—preserved exactly as they were when the doors closed in 1889 after eight nonstop years of operation. Over 140 bullet holes still scar the walls, and many visitors report eerie encounters, from phantom footsteps to the presence of former performers and patrons.
The tour features historic artifacts, personal belongings left behind by entertainers and gamblers, and displays that reveal the gritty, glamorous, and sometimes violent life of Tombstone’s boomtown era. Exhibits include original poker tables, costumes, photographs, and the famous balcony “bird cages” where ladies of the night entertained clients.
